Do Smart Tires Really Improve Safety?

The tire is the only part of a vehicle that touches the road, so even a small change in pressure, temperature or wear can affect braking, steering response and grip. Smart tire technologies aim to make these changes more visible. When used correctly, they can make a meaningful contribution to safety; however, they are not a solution that prevents accidents on their own or provides more grip in every condition.
When buying or renting a vehicle, or planning tire management for a fleet, the key question is not simply whether it is “smart.” It is necessary to assess what data the system measures, how reliably it provides an alert, what the driver will do in response to that alert, and whether basic tire maintenance is carried out regularly.
What is a smart tire, and is it the same as TPMS?
Smart tire is a general term for technologies that collect data about the condition of a tire or wheel assembly and can transmit that data to an in-vehicle system, a driver app or a fleet tracking platform. The sensor may be located inside the wheel, around the valve area, in the rim, or in some designs integrated into the tire structure. The measurement scope and data-processing method are not the same for every product.
The tire pressure monitoring system, or TPMS, is the most common example in this field; however, it would not be accurate to describe every TPMS installation as a comprehensive smart tire system. Direct TPMS systems generally obtain pressure and temperature data from a wheel sensor. Indirect systems often estimate pressure loss from the rotational behaviour of the wheels. More advanced solutions may attempt to generate additional insights about tire load, operating temperature, wear trends or tire-road contact.
The safety value of a smart tire depends as much on interpreting its data correctly and acting in time as it does on the data it collects.
How is data collected and delivered to the driver?
Systems monitor directly measurable values such as pressure and temperature with sensors. The measured data can be transmitted wirelessly to the vehicle control unit and displayed as a warning lamp, information message or mobile-app notification. In commercial vehicles and rental fleets, data may also be sent to remote tracking software, allowing the tire condition of multiple vehicles to be monitored from one centre.
The information provided on tread depth, irregular wear, wet-road grip or the nature of the road surface varies more widely between products. Some solutions present these not as direct measurements but as estimates calculated from vibration, rotation, temperature and vehicle data. For this reason, it is safer to treat an on-screen assessment as a sign that a check is needed, rather than as a definitive physical measurement.
The timing of an alert also matters. Rapid pressure loss and a small pressure variation caused by a change in air temperature do not have the same urgency. Well-designed systems aim to highlight critical changes without exhausting the driver with unnecessary warnings. Even so, particularly after a tire warning appears, the driver should not rely only on the display; they should stop in a safe place and visually inspect the tire.
In which situations does it make a real safety contribution?
The clearest benefit is the early detection of low pressure or an abnormal increase in temperature. An underinflated tire flexes more, may heat up, can alter steering response and may increase risk, especially in a loaded vehicle or at high speed. An early warning gives the driver an opportunity to reduce speed, stop somewhere safe and have the tire checked. This can allow a small leak to be addressed before it turns into more serious tire damage.
Trend monitoring is also valuable for drivers who travel long distances, carry loads frequently and operate vehicle fleets. Still, it is important to remember that these features vary from one vehicle to another. A tire being “smart” does not mean that ESC, ABS or automatic emergency braking systems use tire data in every situation.
Limits of the technology and common mistakes
Smart systems do not create grip; the tire compound, tread pattern, suitability for the season, tread depth and physical condition continue to determine grip. A worn, damaged or unsuitable tire is not a safe tire simply because it has sensors. Likewise, a system may report a pressure issue, but it does not automatically restore the tire to the correct pressure or repair a puncture.
Checking tires only when a warning lamp comes on is another common mistake. Irregular wear, shoulder damage or slow air loss can occur before the warning threshold is reached. When inspecting a new or used vehicle, check that the tire-pressure warning on the instrument panel works and that the system has no active fault message. If there is a used wheel set, winter tire set or replacement wheels, ask whether the sensors are compatible with the vehicle. Incompatible or unregistered sensors can leave the system inactive at the moment when the driver needs it most.
When a rental vehicle is handed over, the general condition of the tires, visible damage and any instrument-panel warnings should be documented together. The renter should know which support line to call if a pressure warning appears and what to do before attempting any intervention on the tire. For rental companies, evaluating recurring warnings against each vehicle’s tire history can help reduce unplanned roadside assistance and unexpected vehicle downtime.

Are the people who will access the data identified, and is there a defined procedure for a critical alert?
Maintenance checklist to follow alongside smart tires
All tires, with or without sensors, need regular checks. Measuring pressure when the tires are cold, meaning after the vehicle has been parked for a long period or after only a short drive, provides a healthier comparison. After a long trip, heavy load, severe impact, pothole contact or warning message, do not wait for the usual inspection time.
Check the pressure of all four tires, and the spare if fitted, at least once a month and before a long journey.
Inspect the treads for stones, nails, cuts, bulges, cracks and wear on one side.
At the interval recommended by the vehicle manufacturer, have tire rotation, balancing and the need for wheel alignment assessed by a professional service.
If a pressure or temperature warning appears, avoid sudden manoeuvres, reduce speed and stop at the first suitable point to check for damage.
After tire replacement or repair, confirm that the TPMS warning goes out and, where required, that the system has been reset or registered again.
